Italian food expert Faith Heller Willinger, and author of the cookbook Red, White & Greens: The Italian Way With Vegetables, recently returned from a visit to Sicily and has provided her food and lodging recommendations in the May 2007 issue of Bon Appetit magazine. She cites Ristorante La Madia as her favorite restaurant in Sicily. It is located in the village of Licata and features "super-fresh seafood, vegetables and fruit with almost exaggerated Sicilian sun-ripened flavors". She highlights the nearby farm-hotel Mandranova as a good base for touring the area.
She recommends La Pineta, a restaurant on the beach outside Marinella di Selinunte. Here "seafood is at its simplest, all wild and straight from the sea". The farm-hotel Il Cuore di Dionisi is highlighted as a great place to stay with 14 well furnished rooms, a restaurant decorated with Sicilian antiques and ceramics, and a large terrace with a view of Selinunte, one of Sicily's greatest architectural sites. Her favorite extra-virgin olive oil can be found at the nearby farm Tenuta Rocchetta.
In Rosolini, she enjoyed Locanda del Borgo and stayed at farm-hotel Nacalino outside Modica. Finally, in Palermo she stayed at the Hotel Plaza Opera which is around the corner from the Borgo Vecchio market, featuring fresh produce, seafood and take-out prepared foods. Her last recommendation is the winery Regaleali where you can not only sample the region's wine, but also have a cooking lesson and traditional Sicilian home-cooked lunch with Anna Tasca Lanza.
